LEGAL ASSISTANCE TO CONTRACT FARMING FOR ETHNIC MINORITY FARMERS IN THE NORTH OF VIETNAM, 2015 – 2017

For three years, ADDA has introduced and trained farmers, small businesses and agricultural businesses in the concept contract farming. The purpose of contract farming is two sided. Firstly, they are aimed to improve and strengthen the rights of farmers and secondly ADDA will inform agricultural businesses about their corporate social responsibility and the benefits of entering into fair contracts with the farmers.

ADDA has worked in three provinces in the northern Vietnam and in total trained more than 26.000 farmers, 87 agricultural businesses as well as mediated and solved 1258 conflicts between farmers and businesses. We have also trained chiefs of villages in contract farming so that they for the future are able to consult farmers as well as mediate between farmers and businesses.

As a result, all actors have acquired knowledge of how the legal processes operate and how one enters into and comply with contracts. This project has therefore contributed to farmers’ awareness in terms of who and how they sign contracts with in order to secure and negotiate better terms.
